How Does It Work?
Don't be afraid, it's a quick and painless process. There are two ways to approach it. The first is to come up with a rough idea for a character in your head. Is he a grizzled detective just three days from retirement, or perhaps he's a private investigator working in a crummy little first floor office above a massage parlour. Perhaps she's a street-smart government agent, working undercover in a dive bar, or maybe a she's a burned out reporting trading in secrets instead of stories. Stereotypes are fine and are a great place to start. Once you've settled on an archetype, click the "New Character" button above and answer the questions in a way that you feel your character would.
Nothing comes to mind? Perhaps the second approach will work for you. Click the "New Character" button and just pick what ever option takes you fancy as it appears. Once you've completed the process you can create an identity and back-story that fit the attributes you end up with.
There are no right or wrong answers. Everyone gets the same amount of points in their Qualities and Identities, and the same value of equipment too. All of your attributes are useful and remember, in A Dirty World, the particulars of your character are fleeting and can change with each scene and session.
